Captain Fawcett is an intriguing new limited edition from contemporary artist Vincent Kamp, part of a series inspired by one of Rembrandt’s early works, and featuring a central figure who, although completely modern, could have stepped out of a Dutch painting of the 1630s. His pensive expression is reminiscent of St. Matthew or St. Jerome, lit from on high in a way that makes this unconventional character look almost beatific in a stunning homage to the subtle chiaroscuro of the Dutch masters. There is a palpable sense of the emotional engagement in his illuminated face and hands, making this one of the most compelling works in the collection.
